Hey guys, I know I usually (if you can call my post production even close to usually) write my blog posts in German, but I’ve been to the Netherlands a few weeks ago and I want everyone to be able to read this blog post.
It’s actually funny I went to Rotterdam because we actually wanted to go to Amsterdam, but the airbnb’s near the center are not quite budget-friendly aka super expensive for students. Then we got ignored by an airbnb host in Amsterdam oost because I asked her about night buses, just in case we wouldn’t catch the last train which runs at 12pm, which instantly made her think we only came to party (far from it, I’m the girl at a party who talks to the dog).
So, long story short, we were overthinking where the hell in Europe we could go, when my friend Tine booked a train to Rotterdam because she misunderstood us. So Daniel and I booked the same train too. We paid about 40€ one way, going there by Deutsche Bahn. Our Airbnb was in Rotterdam oost, 3km from the central station and we paid 60€ for the whole apartment where we could shoot as well (because the three of us are wannabe-photographers, as u can tell from clicking on my friends‘ names).
We had a lot of fun in Rotterdam, and it’s only stone’s throw away from Amsterdam. One day we headed over to the capital, where we also met the local Laura who knows all about the best vegan restaurants and Cafés. The Flixbus takes one hour to get there and costs approximately 5€ one way.
So, without any futher ado, let’s jump right into my tips and analogous pictures I took with my 35mm Film cameras, my all time favorite Canon AV-1 as well as my new old Praktika MTL-3 from a fleamarket.
Cafés + Restaurants
WHERE? There are two coffeeshops of this chain in Rotterdam, one is at Eendrachtsplein 2, the other one is at Meent 12-14
WHAT? a super cute little coffee shop, where you see mostly students and creative people
COFFEE RATING? I would give Coffee Company 3/5 stars. I ordered a small caramel latte and spent almost 4€, and apparently it was very, very small. Anyway, the second time we went there after visiting cheap fashion which is just around the corner and Daniel bought a iced latte for almost the same price which was actually 99% ice but the coffee part was quite delicious. You pay for the location, not the coffee.
WHERE? There are several addresses as well in Rotterdam.
WHAT? it’s a cute icecream shop chain.
ICECREAM RATING? 4/5. Not too expensive and the icecream is super creamy and super italien. Cute interior. Only minus was that we ordered one scoop of matcha icecream that tasted like Sushi. I like sushi, but not as an icecream…
WHERE? Mauritsstraat 1A.
WHAT? Gracy’s is a super super super super super (…) super cute American-looking Diner with yummy burgers and huge diabetes milkshakes.
FOOD RATING? 5/5. I took the veggie burger which was about 8€, not the most delicious one I ever ate but Oh lord, their furniture. Check it out.
WHERE? West-Kruiskade 2A
WHAT? A super delicous Sushi Restaurant right in the center of Rotterdam.
FOOD RATING? 5/5! Great quality Sushi, affordable all you can eat and maaaaany possible combinations. The all you can eat is about 20€.
WHERE? In the most trendy street of Rotterdam, Witte de Withstraat.
WHAT? It’s actually a cute hostel which is quite cheap, but it also has a super cool café.
FOOD RATING? Great great great! 5/5! The first evening we ordered one big homemade lemonade for 3€ to share but the bar keeper made us two that evening. They also have great chocolate cake to share with your friends and the coffee is super yummy!
WHERE? Schiekade 189
WHAT? A Restaurant / Café on the top of a building. They have a small garden from which they get their herbs ect. for the café.
FOOD RATING? I’ve actually not been there yet, but Laura recommended it to me.
WHERE? Meent 25
WHAT? My new all time favorite vintage shop. It really has vintage, no trash, but it’s quite cheap (I paid 10€ for a vintage 80s adidas leggings).
RATING? 500/5 would recommend! Very big selection of vintage clothing, super cute unique pieces and super super affordable.
WHERE? Again in the Witte de Withstraat.
WHAT? A vintage chain that sends all the clothing from shop to shop, it’s scattered all over Europe.
RATING? It’s way more expensive than cheap fashion but serves all hipster and vintage dreams, so I’d say it’s 4/5 because it’s still affordable.
WHERE? Eendrachtsweg 55A.
WHAT? Another, but more high end vintage shop.
RATING? 3/5, still not too expensive, especially in sale, but way smaller than the other two.
WHERE? Guess where. (Witte de Withstraat)
WHAT? I don’t know how to define this, but it has all kind of hipster furniture, clothing and accessoires.
RATING? 3/5. More expensive but it’s worth a visit because everything looks super fancy.
WHERE? Burgemeester van Walsumweg 528
WHAT? A vintage furniture / clothing shop
RATING? 4/5. It’s way too expensive in my opinion but great for taking photos, as you can see in Luca’s Feed.
Cafés + Restaurants
WHERE? Daniel Stalpertstraat 61
WHAT? A restaurant that has only dishes with avocado, many vegan options available.
RATING? 3/5. Kind of overhyped. We paid 8€ for a TOAST. Anyway it’s kind of a cool idea to support.
WHERE? Eerste van der Helsstraat 78
WHAT? A pizza restaurant with the best vegan pizza ever! Also has vegan raw cake and shit.
RATING? 4/5 affordable and very delicious. One little minus is that they don’t have many places to sit so sometimes you need to wait until someone leaves.
WHERE? Bilderdijkstraat 165F
WHAT? A flower / cacti shop with many, many handmade and storemade things. It’s also a very affordable café though.
RATING? 5/5 for the coffee which was quite cheap and included a stroopwafel, 2/5 for the flowers ect because they’re pretty but expensive.
WHERE? Postjeskade 23-25
WHAT? A thrift shop with lots of furniture, clothing, books and vinyls.
RATING? 5/5. Very trashy but just as cheap. I bought a topshop bomber jacket for only 4€.
So, right now the important part. I’ll definetely come back as soon as possible, so what are your tips for the Netherlands?
love, kim x
